I like Democracy. It can be slow, tedious, expensive and sometimes a total pain in the butt, but eventually an answer is arrived at that does the best it can for the most people. It is not perfect and it would probably be impossible to find the perfect answer for everyone, but at the moment it is the best we have.
Democracy is about doing the best we can for the greatest number. A democratic Government is a Government that represents the people. It also has the responsibility to act for all people and look out for the marginalised.
A democratic Government requires a democratic Parliament. If either is not democratic then neither can be.
Politics, in spite of the claims of some is not democracy. Politics is mob rule. Whoever has the biggest stick in the schoolyard beats the opposing group into submission. Then they do as they please until someone else finds a bigger stick.
What we have seen in the last year was not democracy. It was cheap, dirty, grubby sewer politics. It would be ridiculous to call our Parliament a democratic Parliament.
How can a Parliament operating on lies, innuendo smut and sleaze be called democratic?
Is there anyone out there who knows the truth about anything any more?
We have a Liberal Party who that has degenerated into the Bogan Tea Party. We have a Labour Party, who supposed to be a Party of principle sinking to the bottom in a race to keep up with the BTP.
I have seen several major political upheavals but none have succumbed to the gutter politics of the present Parliament.
Is this what we want? Can those who believe in democracy, from all shades of politics, voice there disapproval and insist that Politicians get out of the gutter?
I have never been so glad to see Christmas arrive as I was when Parliament adjourned for the year. I hope next year will be better.
